SUMMARY:Preliminary Program of LSA 2024
DESCRIPTION:From The Lagos Studies Association  \nThe Preliminary Program of LSA 2024 \nWith 200 panels in 2024\, the LSA Conference remains the biggest academic gathering in Nigeria and one of the biggest on the African continent. LSA 2023 featured 137 panels. \nFor five days\, between June 25 and 29\, scholars and practitioners from all the continents of the world will converge\, physically and virtually\, in Lagos to participate in the 8th Annual Lagos Studies Association conference. \nOur unprecedented growth is expected and well-coordinated. The LSA Conference has become a one-stop arena for serious scholarship and intellectual community building for scholars working on Nigeria. 80 percent of the panels are organized sessions. This aids compactness\, making the 2024 program our best to date. \nThe diversity and expansiveness of our 200 panels reflect the current landscape of knowledge about Lagos\, Nigeria\, and Africa. Audiences will choose from over a dozen professional development workshops on book and journal publishing\, academic job hunting\, women in academia\, teaching pedagogy\, fellowship application and grant writing\, and graduate school application and experience\, among others; roundtables on 18 books that are at the cutting edge of scholarship in the humanities and social sciences; three film screenings; a dance performance\, and critical-celebratory panels on very senior scholars and canonical works that laid the foundation of newer studies. Dozens of panels on original paper presentations offer new perspectives on a spectrum of fields and subfields. \nIn addition\, with generous funding from institutions across the world\, LSA 2024 will feature three writing workshops and a Mentoring Program for Nigeria-based Women Graduate Students. At least 150 conference participants will receive free hotel accommodation\, registration fee waiver/reimbursement\, and transportation allowance. We anticipate feeding 500 paper presenters with breakfast\, lunch\, and dinner from June 25 to 29. \nLastly\, all 200 sessions of LSA 2024 will be accessible\, free of charge\, to the audience attending virtually and physically at the University of Lagos because of the unpaid labor and intellectual investment of LSA members\, journal and book acquisition editors\, and senior scholars facilitators; infrastructure support of the University of Lagos; and funding from The British Academy\, Florida International University\, Yale University\, Canada Research Chair in Youth and African Urban Futures\, Cadbury Endowment at the Department of African Studies and Anthropology (University of Birmingham)\, The UK Arts and Humanities Research Council\, African Studies Association of the United Kingdom\, Ben Gurion University of the Negev\, University of Lagos\, Kansas African Studies Center (University of Kansas)\, The French Institute for Research in Africa (IFRA-Nigeria). \nThe Final Program\, to be released around June 10\, will have Zoom links. \nDownload the Preliminary Program of LSA 2024\, here: https://static1.squarespace.com/static/630afcab31f1c61c6a285f5c/t/6641df10022b7c22b96628b9/1715592979134/Preliminary+Program.pdf \n\n\nShare this:\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n More\n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n Like this:Like Loading…

SUMMARY:Conference on Excellence in Research in Human and Social Sciences
DESCRIPTION:From Global Africa \n\n\n\n\nConference on Excellence in Research in Human and Social Sciences.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe conference will take place on Thursday\, June 13\, 2024\, from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM (GMT+2). \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nGlobal Africa is a multilingual and interdisciplinary pan-African academic journal. Published quarterly and available in Open Access\, it hosts reflections on global issues and their challenges approached from Africa and its diasporas to demonstrate how world transformations unfold from the continent. \n\n\nIts 5th issue was released last March. However\, the Global Africa program is broader: it aims to enhance the ecosystem of continental scientific publishing through the creation of journals\, as well as the promotion of open access\, capacity building for human resources in university presses\, and scientific publishing professionals… Global Africa particularly prioritizes the digitization of academic archives: by digitizing and making accessible\, in partnership\, African journals lacking visibility\, it will contribute to preserving and sharing Africa’s intellectual heritage. \n\nThe main presenters of this conference :\n\n\nMame Penda Ba is an associate professor of political science at Gaston Berger University in Saint-Louis\, Senegal. As the Director of Laspad (Interdisciplinary Laboratory in Human and Social Sciences)\, she is the editor-in-chief of the Global Africa journal. She is also the Executive Secretary of the African Studies Association for Africa (ASAA). Her work covers public policy analysis (education\, research\, health\, gender\, decentralization\, security) and sociology of religion.\n\n\nToussaint Kafarhire Murhula is a political analyst\, researcher in social sciences\, and Director of the Arrupe Research and Training Center in Lubumbashi\, DRC. He is the president of the African Studies Association for Africa (ASAA) and deputy editor of the Global Africa journal. His research focuses on social justice\, democracy and peace\, political violence and conflicts\, religion\, and global public health policy. \n\n\nThe conference is open to all\, within the capacity of the software\, at : \n\n\n\nhttps://ird-fr.zoom.us/j/92587870949?pwd=bEs0M04rYzNTaGt6WEs3b29JZEd2dz09 \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nMeeting ID: 925 8787 0949 \n\n\nPasscode: 255578 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShare this:\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n More\n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n Like this:Like Loading…

SUMMARY:09 Feb 2024 | Post SoNA Discussion on National Politics and South Africa’s Role as Global Peacemaker: The Dynamics of the 2024 Elections
DESCRIPTION:From IJR: https://www.ijr.org.za/ \n  \n \n \n\nClick here to RSVP \nThis Diplomatic Briefing will be convened after the State of the Nation Address (SONA)\, to provide an opportunity for the International Community\, Parliamentarians Government Officials\, Civil Society actors and Analysts to reflect on South Africa’s emerging role as a global peacemaker\, and also assess the state of the nation\, political culture by drawing from the findings of the recently released South African Reconciliation Barometer (SARB). \nSouth Africa played a leading role in convening the African Peace Mission to Russia and Ukraine\, in 2023\, and lodged an application to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to ensure adherence to International Humanitarian Law in the conflict between Israel and Hamas. South Africa is increasingly filling the vacuum of international leadership in peace and security. How will this repositioning impact upon the dynamics of the upcoming 2024 National Elections in South Africa? \nThese emerging issues\, combined with an analysis of the SONA address will provide food for thought for an enriching discussion on current national and global politics. \n\nShare this:\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n More\n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n Like this:Like Loading…

SUMMARY:Launch Islam West Africa Collection - 9 November
DESCRIPTION:From Frédérick Madore \nOn 9 November 2023\, the Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient (ZMO) will officially launch the Islam West Africa Collection in Berlin. This project\, which I’m directing\, is a collaborative\, open-access digital database that currently contains over 5\,000 archival documents\, newspaper articles\, Islamic publications of various kinds\, audio and video recordings\, photographs\, and references on Islam and Muslims in Burkina Faso\, Benin\, Niger\, Nigeria\, Togo and Côte d‘Ivoire. This project\, funded by the Berlin Senate\, is a continuation of the Islam Burkina Faso Collection\, which I created in 2021 in collaboration with the University of Florida. \nFar from being the end of a project\, this is just the beginning\, as the database will continue to grow and will lay the groundwork for future collaborations with other scholars and institutes as more countries may be added. \nThe event will be hybrid\, from 16:00 to 17:30\, followed by a reception. Mauro Nobili (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign\, USA)\, Issouf Binaté (Université Alassane Ouattara\, Côte d’Ivoire) and Kai Kresse (ZMO) will comment on the project. \nFor the Zoom link or to attend in person (RSVP by November 1st)\, please register at https://www.zmo.de/en/events/launch-islam-west-africa-collection \n\nShare this:\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n More\n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n Like this:Like Loading…

SUMMARY:INVITATION TO WEDNESDAY SEMINAR: America and the Production of Islamic Truth in Uganda
DESCRIPTION:From the Communications Officer\, Makerere Institute of Social Research (MISR) \nThe seminar will be held on Wednesday 26th July 2023 at 2.00 pm at the MISR Seminar Room 1 and virtually on Zoom. \nThe seminar will focus on  Dr.Yahya Sseremba’s new book\, America and the Production of Islamic Truth in Uganda\, with Dr. Joseph Kasule\, Adventino Banjwa\, and Jacob Katumusiime as the discussants. \n\nAbout the Book:\n\nThis book investigates the ways in which the war on terror has transformed the postcolonial state in Africa. Taking American intervention in Islamic education in Uganda as the entry point\, the book demonstrates how state control over Islamic truth production and everyday Muslim life has increased. \nDuring the colonial period\, the Muslims in Uganda were governed in two ways: partly as lesser citizens within the Christian-dominated civil sphere and partly as members of a distinct Muslim domain. In this domain\, a local system of Islamic education developed with a degree of autonomy that reflected the limits of the colonial state in shaping the Muslim subject. In the subsequent postcolonial period\, systems of patronage and clientelistic networks dominated\, and Muslim leaders were co-opted by the state\, but without much real interference in the day-to-day lives of ordinary Muslims. However\, as part of the war on terror\, the US State Department seeks to bring the mechanisms of Islamic truth production\, especially the madrasa\, under direct state control and civil society scrutiny. This book argues that the “Muslim domain as a separate entity is coming to an end as it is being absorbed into the civil sphere\, unifying the state’s domination of society.” The book also analyzes local Ugandan Muslim initiatives to modernize and contextualize their own education and religion and how these initiatives are shaped by and transcend the dominant power. \nA thorough exploration of US foreign policy and Islamic education\, this book will be of interest to students and scholars in the fields of Political Studies\, African Studies\, and Religious Studies. \n\nBelow are the seminar details.\n\n\n\n\nDate: July 26\, 2023\nTime: 2:00 PM\nLocation: MISR Seminar Room 1 and Zoom\nRegister in advance for this meeting: https://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJMldemqrj4sHNOmIFEEiisOw_-qULKt1cAX \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. \n\n\nShare this:\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n More\n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n Like this:Like Loading…
