SUMMARY:2020 John Langalibalele Dube Memorial Lecture
DESCRIPTION:The College of Humanities cordially invites you to the 2020 John Langalibalele Dube Memorial Lecture \nSpeaker: Professor Nomalanga Mkhize \nTitle: Locating the Umbilical Cord in Africa: Why the South African Decolinisation Debate Must Resist North and Latin American Trends \nDate: Thursday\, 17 September 2020\nTime: 15h00 to 17h30 \nBIOGRAPHY \nProfessor Nomalanga Mkhize is a Historian and Head of Department of History and Political Studies at the Nelson Mandela University in Port Elizabeth. Her family roots are in Willowfountain\, Pietermaritzburg and eMbonisweni in White River. She spent parts of her childhood in Swaziland and Zimbabwe. Her research interests are in 19th century Xhosa writers and their record of precolonial African histories\, legends and mythologies. She is also a member of the National Research Foundation (NRF) Board. Outside of academia she writes children’s books. \nCLICK HERE TO RSVP \nENQUIRIES ONLY\nShakila Thakurpersad | email – thakurpersads@ukzn.ac.za \nABSTRACT \nUsing the current #BlackLivesMatter protests as a starting point\, in this talk I want to explore the limits of the current wave of decolonial and decolonisation discourse as they apply to the African situation – 60 years since the first country gained independence. I will argue that the current academic trends in decolonisation\, while helpful in describing some of the deep structural problems facing South Africa\, its universities and society\, cannot lead us towards a liberated Africa. I will argue that the current trends are not well located in the long traditions of Black Africa’s education philosophies which are rooted in a strong moral ethic notion of education without assimilation. I will argue that in fact\, today’s decolonisation trend is begging for white acceptance and affirmation with its focus on symbolic victories around statues and correcting racist behaviour online. I propose that African liberatory education should build on the older lineages of building independent Black institutions as advanced by the likes of JL Dube\, as well as the organic education of our grandmothers and community. I call the lineages of JL Dube the ‘umbilical’ tradition – that roots us in our own context while pushing us to believe we can outcompete the rest of the world that has dominated us. \n  \n\nShare this:\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n More\n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:The State of South Africa’s Democracy: Insights from the Afrobarometer and South African Reconciliation Barometer Surveys
DESCRIPTION:South Africa commemorated its twenty-sixth year of democracy under a national lockdown. The coronavirus pandemic has facilitated the largest expansion of state power in this century. Governments around the world have suspended economic activities and civil liberties in an effort to curb the spread of COVID-19. What effect this has had on citizens’ views on democracy? \nThis webinar presents newly-published research from the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation’s (IJR) Research and Policy programme\, namely the Afrobarometer and South African Reconciliation Barometer (SARB) surveys. The two nationally representative surveys\, conducted in 2018 and 2019 respectively\, reveal that South Africans were largely dissatisfied with how democracy was functioning and disengaging from certain channels of political participation well before the introduction of the national lockdown. Why are South Africans frustrated with their democracy and what can be done to restore confidence in democracy? Do high levels of poverty\, inequality and unemployment influence public opinion on the state of governance and democracy? \nThe speakers will present their findings and discuss how the introduction of the national lockdown might affect public opinion on democracy in South Africa. Finally\, by examining the trends of public opinion from both Afrobarometer and the SARB surveys\, the panellists will assess possible means to restore public confidence in democracy. Participants are encouraged to pose questions before or during the webinar. The webinar will be live-streamed on IJR’s Facebook page. \nClick Here to register for this event \n\n\n\nDate\n: Thursday\, 13 August 2020\n\n\nWhen\n: 13h00-14h00 (CAT)\n\n\n\n\nShare this:\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n More\n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:Thinking Gender 2020: Sexual Violence as Structural Violence: Feminist Visions of Transformative Justice
DESCRIPTION:This year marks Thinking Gender’s 30th anniversary! \nFRIDAY\, MARCH 6\, 2020\nCARNESALE COMMONS\, UCLA \nGENERAL REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN \nPre-Register by Friday\, February 28\, 2020. In-person registration will also be available on the day of the event. \nDETAILED SCHEDULE \nThinking Gender 2020 will focus on feminist\, queer\, trans\, anti-carceral\, transnational\, and intersectional approaches to sexual violence.  \nRecent #MeToo mobilizations against high-profile predatory sexual abusers including Harvey Weinstein\, R. Kelly\, and Jeffrey Epstein have heightened public conversation around sexual violence. While important contributions have challenged dominant approaches to sexual violence\, much of it has remained caught in legalistic\, carceral\, or criminal justice discourses that emphasize the punishment of individual actors to the exclusion of envisioning alternative definitions of repair and justice. Such dominant approaches center evidence and proof\, and offer only the punishment of individual perpetrators as remedy\, often in ways that exacerbate existing structural inequalities. Decades of scholarship and activism have demonstrated the inefficacy of such punitive models to curb sexual violence as well as the ways in which they exacerbate the policing of already marginalized communities. \n\nShare this:\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n More\n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n Like this:Like Loading...

DESCRIPTION:The Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC)\, the National Foundations Dialogue Initiative (NFDI) and the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation (IJR) are partnering to host a series of national dialogues that bring different institutions and groupings together to discuss key issues confronting South Africa. The first dialogue will bring together the three branches of the state – the Executive\, the Legislature and the Judiciary – as well as religious organisations (through the South African Council of Churches – SACC)\, other civil society organisations (through Abahlali baseMjondolo)\, business organisations (through Business Leadership South Africa – BLSA)\, and labour (through the major union federations). Issues arising from the event will be taken forward into further discussions. \nThis first Dialogue will centre on assertiveness within the framework of the Constitution. Two inter-\nrelated questions will frame the conversation. First\, how do the three branches of the state\, religious bodies\, civil society\, business organisations\, labour\, and people not affiliated to any formal grouping\nappropriate for themselves the key values underpinning the Constitution (human dignity\, achievement of equality\, advancement of human rights and freedoms\, non-racialism\, and non-sexism)\, asserting their rights while recognising their responsibilities towards others? For many it is unconscionable to think that constitutional values are compromised or that they need to be debated and potentially replaced. For others\, these values are not values but the result of an elite compact which has ignored the voices of many. There needs to be a space where these views can be expressed and discussed in a way that will take the conversation forward as opposed to entrenching groups into mutually exclusive\, binary positions. \nThe second question is: How can all who live in South Africa be assertive in holding the three branches\nof the state accountable for delivering on the fundamental rights in the Constitution? \nThis Dialogue\, and the series to follow\, seeks to bring key role-players and other parts of the body\npolitic into a constructive dialogic space. \nWhere: Old Assembly\, Parliament\, Cape Town\nWhen: 24 October 2019\, 17h30 for 18h00-21h00\nRSVP: Click here to RSVP \n\nShare this:\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n More\n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:The Ashley Kriel Memorial Lecture
DESCRIPTION:In 1987\, at just 20 years old\, Cape Flats anti-apartheid activist and youth leader Ashley Kriel was murdered by police. In commemoration of his legacy of leadership and the contribution that youth across South Africa played in the struggle against apartheid\, the IJR hosts an annual memorial youth lecture. This year\, the lecture is hosted in partnership with the Ashley Kriel Skills Development Centre based at Bonteheuwel Secondary School. \nThis year’s lecture under the theme Dying to Be Men: A New Generation of Manhood aims to explore how ideas of masculinity and manhood informs gender relations. The lecture will also reflect on the context that gave rise to the young lions of the 70s and 80s and the struggles facing young men and women today. For too many communities\, violence and SGBV is pervasive and severely limits the social freedoms of particularly the most vulnerable in society. \nThis year the lecture celebrates the positive examples of manhood in South African communities – particularly on the Cape Flats – unpack the forces that shape these\, and explore the link between how we raise boys\, violence and SGBV. \nClick here to confirm your attendance! \n\n\n\nWhere\n: Bonteheuwel Secondary School.\n\n\nWhen:\n: 17 October 2019\, 18h30 – 20h00\n\n\nContact person:\n: Laverne Jacobs: LJacobs@ijr.org.za\n\n\nDirections:\n: Click here for (directions / map)\n\n\n\n\nShare this:\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n More\n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n Like this:Like Loading...
