SUMMARY:Thinking Gender 2020: Sexual Violence as Structural Violence: Feminist Visions of Transformative Justice
DESCRIPTION:This year marks Thinking Gender’s 30th anniversary! \nFRIDAY\, MARCH 6\, 2020\nCARNESALE COMMONS\, UCLA \nGENERAL REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN \nPre-Register by Friday\, February 28\, 2020. In-person registration will also be available on the day of the event. \nDETAILED SCHEDULE \nThinking Gender 2020 will focus on feminist\, queer\, trans\, anti-carceral\, transnational\, and intersectional approaches to sexual violence.  \nRecent #MeToo mobilizations against high-profile predatory sexual abusers including Harvey Weinstein\, R. Kelly\, and Jeffrey Epstein have heightened public conversation around sexual violence. While important contributions have challenged dominant approaches to sexual violence\, much of it has remained caught in legalistic\, carceral\, or criminal justice discourses that emphasize the punishment of individual actors to the exclusion of envisioning alternative definitions of repair and justice. Such dominant approaches center evidence and proof\, and offer only the punishment of individual perpetrators as remedy\, often in ways that exacerbate existing structural inequalities. Decades of scholarship and activism have demonstrated the inefficacy of such punitive models to curb sexual violence as well as the ways in which they exacerbate the policing of already marginalized communities. \n\nShare this:\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n More\n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:Constitutional Dialogue on Assertiveness and Accountability under the Constitution
DESCRIPTION:The Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC)\, the National Foundations Dialogue Initiative (NFDI) and the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation (IJR) are partnering to host a series of national dialogues that bring different institutions and groupings together to discuss key issues confronting South Africa. The first dialogue will bring together the three branches of the state – the Executive\, the Legislature and the Judiciary – as well as religious organisations (through the South African Council of Churches – SACC)\, other civil society organisations (through Abahlali baseMjondolo)\, business organisations (through Business Leadership South Africa – BLSA)\, and labour (through the major union federations). Issues arising from the event will be taken forward into further discussions. \nThis first Dialogue will centre on assertiveness within the framework of the Constitution. Two inter-\nrelated questions will frame the conversation. First\, how do the three branches of the state\, religious bodies\, civil society\, business organisations\, labour\, and people not affiliated to any formal grouping\nappropriate for themselves the key values underpinning the Constitution (human dignity\, achievement of equality\, advancement of human rights and freedoms\, non-racialism\, and non-sexism)\, asserting their rights while recognising their responsibilities towards others? For many it is unconscionable to think that constitutional values are compromised or that they need to be debated and potentially replaced. For others\, these values are not values but the result of an elite compact which has ignored the voices of many. There needs to be a space where these views can be expressed and discussed in a way that will take the conversation forward as opposed to entrenching groups into mutually exclusive\, binary positions. \nThe second question is: How can all who live in South Africa be assertive in holding the three branches\nof the state accountable for delivering on the fundamental rights in the Constitution? \nThis Dialogue\, and the series to follow\, seeks to bring key role-players and other parts of the body\npolitic into a constructive dialogic space. \nWhere: Old Assembly\, Parliament\, Cape Town\nWhen: 24 October 2019\, 17h30 for 18h00-21h00\nRSVP: Click here to RSVP \n\nShare this:\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n More\n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:The Ashley Kriel Memorial Lecture
DESCRIPTION:In 1987\, at just 20 years old\, Cape Flats anti-apartheid activist and youth leader Ashley Kriel was murdered by police. In commemoration of his legacy of leadership and the contribution that youth across South Africa played in the struggle against apartheid\, the IJR hosts an annual memorial youth lecture. This year\, the lecture is hosted in partnership with the Ashley Kriel Skills Development Centre based at Bonteheuwel Secondary School. \nThis year’s lecture under the theme Dying to Be Men: A New Generation of Manhood aims to explore how ideas of masculinity and manhood informs gender relations. The lecture will also reflect on the context that gave rise to the young lions of the 70s and 80s and the struggles facing young men and women today. For too many communities\, violence and SGBV is pervasive and severely limits the social freedoms of particularly the most vulnerable in society. \nThis year the lecture celebrates the positive examples of manhood in South African communities – particularly on the Cape Flats – unpack the forces that shape these\, and explore the link between how we raise boys\, violence and SGBV. \nClick here to confirm your attendance! \n\n\n\nWhere\n: Bonteheuwel Secondary School.\n\n\nWhen:\n: 17 October 2019\, 18h30 – 20h00\n\n\nContact person:\n: Laverne Jacobs: LJacobs@ijr.org.za\n\n\nDirections:\n: Click here for (directions / map)\n\n\n\n\nShare this:\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n More\n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:Social Cohesion After 25 Years of Democracy
DESCRIPTION:Looking into Social Cohesion 25 Years into our Democracy \nThe IJR cordially invites you to attend the upcoming conference on Social Cohesion. \nDespite the steps taken to dismantle apartheid\, one of its lasting legacies has been a fractured and divided society. Race and class remain defining faultlines and South Africa is one of the most unequal societies in the world. \nThe question remains: How do we build an inclusive\, equal and fair society? We also need to ask what is working and how do we build on what is being done. \nPlease confirm your attendance by 11 September 2019. \nClick here to confirm your attendance.

SUMMARY:The 9th Toyin Falola Annual International Conference on Africa and the African Diaspora (TOFAC 2019)
DESCRIPTION:Theme: RELIGION\, THE STATE AND GLOBAL POLITICS \nVenue: Babcock University\, Ilishan-Remo\, Ogun State\, Nigeria \n\nDate: July 1-3\, 2019 (arrival\, June 30; departure\, July 4th) \nAbstract Submission Open Now\, Deadline: 01 April 2019 \n\nThis conference will examine all the major narratives and theories of religion and politics produced by scholars and policy-makers over the years. It will encourage intellectual collaboration and production from within and/or focused on Africa and the African Diaspora. It will also contribute to contemporary discourse on religion\, the State\, and Global Politics\, in order to illuminate Africa’s position in global religions\, international policy\, and national development and identity formation. Participants are expected to critically question and hopefully set aside misleading representations and narratives on African religious experience. \nIn the past\, scholars of African religion and politics have engaged topics such as missionary activities\, colonialism\, and the spread of religion in Africa\, as well as questions of cultural survival or defeat. In Western societies\, policies and narratives regarding religion are often produced under the assumption that the Church and the State remain fundamentally and ideologically separate. Meanwhile\, the connections between religion and state are becoming increasingly relevant worldwide. The global community is being confronted with violent terrorism\, which is often tied to organized religion\, wrongly or rightly by the media\, the State\, and international government and non-governmental organizations. Therefore\, in the contemporary geopolitical landscape\, state policymakers and scholars of politics\, state formation\, international relations\, and globalization can hardly ignore issues of religion\, raising questions of religious freedom\, tolerance\, violence\, and oppression. In light of the oversimplified\, popular rhetoric surrounding religion and state policy\, scholars and policymakers are tasked to think conceptually and empirically about the role of religion in the state and in international affairs. \nWhereas Western scholarship has necessarily focused on the tensions between religions and secularisms at the State and international level\, and on producing responses to religious terrorist movements such as ISIS and Boko Haram\, there is also the need to explore alternative indigenous religions and spiritualities in Africa and the African Diaspora\, to uncover local expressions and practices of religion in Africa and their impact on State policy\, social organization\, and/or global connections\, and to analyze recent developments by African states to foster or hamper religious movements and understandings in Africa. It is also useful to consider the Diasporic movement of religious ideas and practices across national boundaries. Approaching these issues from within the African and African Diasporic context\, it is important to reconsider hegemonic understandings of religion\, as well as hegemonic understandings of nationalism\, policy\, and development. \nThe conference will attempt to push the boundaries of Western epistemology and engage African knowledge as a means of working through popular assumptions and contentious debates about the past\, present\, and future of Africa\, African religions\, spiritualities\, and secularisms\, and the connections between local\, national\, and global politics. While many participants will present in English\, we encourage presentations in other languages\, most notably in Ajami\, Arabic\, and French. \nA cross-disciplinary approach is necessary for understanding the entanglement of religion\, the State\, and global politics in Africa and the African Diaspora. Therefore\, this conference welcomes paper submissions from a variety of disciplines\, including but not limited to history\, political science\, sociology\, religious studies\, philosophy\, economics\, international relations\, peace and conflict studies\, literary and cultural studies\, communication and language studies\, education\, management sciences\, and area studies. \nSUBMISSION INFORMATION \nSubmission is open now. Proposals for paper presentations\, panels and/or performances should include a 150-200-word abstract and title\, as well as the author’s name\, institutional affiliation/address\, email address(es) and telephone number. All proposals for presentation and eventual publication must be the original work of the author/artist. The deadline for the submission of abstracts is April 1\, 2019. All abstracts should be sent to tofac2019@gmail.com and also copied to tofac2019@babcock.edu.ng.

SUMMARY:19th Annual Africa Conference at The University of Texas at Austin
DESCRIPTION:19th Annual Africa Conference at The University of Texas at Austin \nMarch 29-31\, 2019 \nDepartment of History\, UT Austin \n \nIDENTITIES \nAfrica’s intertwined historical trajectories signal at the imbricated nature of identities in the continent. At the same time\, politicization of different identities for the mobilization of diverse population groups adds another dimension to this complex terrain. The 2019 Africa Conference intends to critically examine the highly intricate and contested processes of identity formation and its significance for African societies. Furthermore\, the conference will engage with discussions on identities that are intimately linked to notions of African diaspora across the Atlantic\, the Mediterranean\, and the Indian Ocean. The primary aim of the conference is to reflect on the varying and varied forms of social practices and processes through which identities are constructed\, contested\, negotiated\, and reconfigured in relation to one another. Simultaneously\, the conference intends to create an intellectual space for examining the politics of identity that systematically marginalizes\, excludes\, disempowers\, and denudes certain social groups. Beyond the specific emphasis on Africa\, the overarching focus of the conference is to engage with different theoretical inflections that have emerged in the existing scholarship on imbricated identities as well as to probe into the ways in which they have been challenged and reformulated within the academia. \nScholars are invited to examine diverse aspects of identity formation in Africa or within African communities. The conference intends to address core questions such as what constitutes the different practices of making and unmaking of identities\, why various social groups resort to identity politics of different sorts\, what are the larger implications of identity politics in African social formations\, and how socially marginalized and excluded groups invest in identity politics to endorse right-based social movements. Parallel to that\, the conference invites inquiries about how transnational and global currents inform the discursive formations of various identities among Africans and the African diaspora. It invites participants to engage with critical questions related to nationalist formations\, racial identities\, politics of borderland\, linguistic and religious identities\, gender identities\, and sexual minorities. Simultaneously\, the conference invites discussions on overlapping spaces of identity formation through investigations of cosmopolitanism\, hybridity\, pluriversalism\, and Afropolitanism. The objective of such dialogues is to pluralize the narratives on certain assumed and ambiguous positionalities in African societies. \nFollowing the tradition of past years\, the conference will provide a platform for scholars from various disciplines and geographical locations to interact\, exchange ideas\, and receive feedback. Submitted papers will be assigned to various panels according to the similarities in theme\, topic\, discipline\, or geographical focus. Thematically focused panel proposals (with 3-5 participants) are highly encouraged. Graduate students are encouraged to attend and present papers. The broader goal of the conference is to publish selected papers in a series of book volumes. \nWe invite submissions on the following sub-themes\, in addition to other ideas that the participants may have: \n\nTheoretical inflections on identities\nEthnic identity politics in Africa\nNationalist formations and Africa’s past and present\nCitizenship\, nationality\, and migrant workers in Africa\nReligious identities and Africa’s pluriversalism\nIslam and religious symbolism in Africa\nMinoritarian nationalism in Africa\nMigration\, xenophobia\, and politics of identity in Africa\nSexual identities and gendered spaces\nMiscegenation and racial identities in Africa\nPolitics of place\, space\, and identity in Africa\nConflicts\, refugees\, and national identities in Africa\nBorderland\, migration\, and citizenship in Africa\nCreative expressions and performance of identity in Africa\nCreative pasts and historical manifestations of identity politics\nEveryday worldly practices\nLinguistic identities and nation-state in Africa\nAfrican material cultures and performance of identity\nExploration of diasporic dissonance or diasporic collaboration\nCosmopolitanism\, hybridity\, and African pluriversalism\nGlobalization\, Afropolitanism\, and African futures\n\nEach individual proposal must include: 1) title of the work\, and an abstract of 200 words 2) name of the presenter (with the surname underlined) 3) mailing address\, 4) phone number 5) email 6) institutional affiliation 7) three to five keywords that best characterize the themes and topics relevant to your submission. Participants are expected to follow these guidelines. \nProposals for panels (3-5 presenters) must include: 1) title of the panel and a collective summary of 250 words on the panel’s theme\, including the title of each individual work 2) a 200-word abstract for the presentation of each speaker 3) mailing address 4) phone number 5) email and 6) institutional affiliation of each presenter. \nProposals will be accepted by email: toyinfalola@austin.utexas.edu and on the official conference website from mid-August to 15th of December 2018 (http://www.utexas.edu/cola/africa-conference/). A mandatory non-refundable registration fee of $150 for scholars and $100 for graduate students must be paid immediately upon the acceptance of the abstract. This conference fee includes conference t-shirt and bag\, admission to the panels\, workshops\, and special events\, as well as transportation to and from the hotel and conference events. Registration also includes breakfast for all three days\, dinner on Friday night\, lunch on Saturday\, a banquet with DJ and open bar Saturday evening\, and a closing celebration at Dr. Falola’s house including dinner and DJ. SUMMARY:CHCI Africa Workshop (Addis 2019) "Emancipation\, Decolonization\, Freedom"
DESCRIPTION:The first CHCI Africa Workshop\, Addis 2019\, will be held at Addis Ababa University (Ethiopia). Hosted by the Consortium of Humanities Institutes and Centers (CHCI) in collaboration with the College of Performing and Visual Art and the Center of African Studies at Addis Ababa University\, the workshop will include intensive seminars\, mentoring and training\nworkshops\, and guest lectures. \nThe Addis 2019 workshop will include three intensive seminars focused on re-conceptualizing Africa as both a theoretical category and a prism to examine the contemporary world. Through art\, literature\, performance\, and philosophy\, the seminars will build on the possibility of Africa that flourished across the continent and into the diaspora during the early years of decolonization. During the course of the workshop\, participants will critically engage the category of Africa itself\, looking beyond both the post-Cold War focus on Africa as a metaphor for regression\, decay\, and urgent intervention and the limited opposition between ‘crisis’ and ‘renaissance.’ The new public debates on freedom and emancipation in the continent cut across differences framed in terms of ethnic or national affiliation\, language\, region\, religion\, or\nhistorical background. Addis 2019 will focus on redefining and multiplying the images of Africa and Africans past and present. Through intensive seminars and related activities\, which will include lectures\, panels\, artists talks\, and site visits\, participants will explore a range of critical positions and cultural practices. They will reflect on current and historical modes of theorizing Africa – and develop new ones. \nAddis 2019 cfp form \nAddis 2019 cfp \n\nShare this:\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n More\n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n Like this:Like Loading...
