DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nThe “Black Reconstruction as a Portal” Sawyer Seminar at the University of California\, Irvine is excited to announce the following virtual event. Could you please help us share this with your listservs? \nThe “Black Reconstruction as a Portal” Sawyer Seminar at the University of California\, Irvine is excited to announce the following virtual event: \nWhat: “Abahlali as a Movement of Dignity and Courage”\nWho: A Conversation between S’bu Zikode and Ruth Wilson Gilmore\nWhen: Thursday\, May 11th at 10am PST\, 1pm EST\, 7pm South Africa time\nWhere: Zoom – https://tinyurl.com/4afar5sv \nDescription: In this Trans-Atlantic and Pan-African conversation\, S’bu Zikode and Ruth Wilson Gilmore will explore the work of one of South Africa’s most important contemporary social movements\, Abahlali baseMjondolo. Abahlali is a movement of\, by\, and for the poor\, with thousands of members living in shack settlements who are fighting for land\, housing\, and dignity. The movement’s lived Black Geographies of liberation struggle offer us a fruitful medium to explore both commonalities and specificities in forms of place-based social movement mobilization across different national and regional contexts. \nS’bu Zikode is President of Abahlali baseMjondolo (Shack Dwellers Movement)\, which began in 2005 in Durban\, South Africa. Today it is one of the largest social movements in South Africa. Zikode has been invited to speak about the movement in dozens of countries across the world. Writings by Abahlali can be found at: https://abahlali.org \nRuth Wilson Gilmore is an abolitionist\, scholar\, and organizer. She teaches in the PhD program of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the City University of New York\, where she is also Director of the Center for Place\, Culture\, and Politics. She is the author of the prize-winning Golden Gulag: Prisons\, Surplus\, Crisis\, and Opposition in Globalizing California (UC Press); of Abolition Geographies: Essays Towards Liberation (Verso); and of the forthcoming Change Everything: Racial Capitalism and the Case for Abolition (Haymarket). \n“Black Reconstruction as a Portal” is a year-long Sawyer Seminar at the University of California\, Irvine that explores the global salience of visions for Black Reconstruction as a portal between the crisis that marks our current predicament and the freedom dreams of those who have taken to the streets insisting that another world is still possible. I will do so by probing the reception of Du Bois’ ideas in continental Portugal and its dominated territories in Africa\, and the articulation of Du Bois’ concepts into operative and practical principles against Portuguese colonialism. I will conclude by discussing the ways in which Black Reconstruction still yields crucial insights to grapple with the color line in contemporary Portugal\, as the society that harbors the largest diasporic community from the former ‘Portuguese’ Africa. \nSpeaker: António Tomás\, University of Johannesburg\, Graduate School of Architecture\, “From Du Bois to Cabral: ‘Portuguese’ Africa and the Color Line”\nDiscussant: Steven Osuna\, California State University Long Beach\, Sociology \n“Black Reconstruction as a Portal” is a year-long Sawyer Seminar at the University of California\, Irvine that explores the global salience of visions of Black Reconstruction as a portal between the crisis that marks our current predicament and the freedom dreams of those who have taken to the streets insisting that another world is still possible. SUMMARY:Reflections on the 2022 General Elections in Kenya: What is at Stake? (zoom webinar)
DESCRIPTION:Kenya General Elections March 2013 (Photo: The Commonwealth\, Flickr) \nRegister to Attend \nKenya\, like many African countries has struggled and continues to struggle with management of elections. This has often led to outbreaks of post-election violence resulting in killings and displacement of many people\, among other results. In 2007\, more than 1\,100 people were killed and over 500\,000 displaced following its 2007 elections—just one example of the devastating toll such violence can take. \nWith a highly contested election in  August 2022 that will see a transitional government\, this panel of Kroc Institute and Notre Dame Law School alumni\, explores the question\, what has been done and what still remains to be done to reduce the likelihood of electoral violence almost 15 years after 2007 post-election violence? \nPanelists will contribute diverse perspectives on the repercussions of the 2022 elections and discuss strategies that were put in place to mitigate the likelihood of violence. \nThis panel is co-sponsored by the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies\, The Notre Dame East Africa Alumni Club\, and Notre Dame International.  \nPanelists:  \nJackline Aridi (Moderator)\, Director\, Nairobi Global Centre \nMuthee Kiunga\, Human Rights Advocate; Resettlement Office\, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) \nLevit Nudi\, Cyber Security Researcher \nElias Opongo\, S.J. DESCRIPTION:Invitation to attend: Women and the Unfinished Business of the TRC \n \nRegister here \nAs we draw Women’s Month to a close\, the IJR would like to reflect of the experience of women and the TRC\, looking at what happened at the TRC\, to assess the legacy it has had and to look at what still needs to be done. \nThe event will be taking place on-line on the 31st August 2022\, from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm \nBackground \nColonialism and apartheid impacted on women in specific and pernicious ways.  These systems were embedded with patriarchy and targeted women’s bodies\, as well as assaulting them on a psychological and emotional level.  The depths of depravity in the treatment and torture of women have been well documented.  Many women not only suffered for their actions\, but were often targeted because of their proximity to prominent male liberation fighters. \nWhile the TRC held a session on gender\, it has been criticised for its gender-neutral approach.  This approached implied that the experience of women and men were the same and ignored the fact that women and men experienced apartheid differently\, based on their gender. \nThe aim of this discussion will be to reflect on the experiences of the TRC\, to identify the challenges which remain and to look to a vision of the future. \nSome of the issues that we hope to raise are: \n\nHow did the TRC address gender\, what do you think the TRC did right\, and what do you think the TRC could have done better\, as regards gender?\nSurvivors’ experiences of the TRC\, what the TRC did right\, and what the TRC could have done better?\nHow have we dealt with the issues raised by the TRC? What more needs to be done?\nHow do we understand justice and reconciliation from a gender perspective?\nIf we did the TRC over\, what would it need to encapsulate and include to have an impact?\nWhat is the vision going forward?\n\nProgramme: \n10:00    Welcome and introduction \n10:10    Speakers \n11:10    Panel discussion \n11:30    Comfort break \n11:45    Discussion \n12:45    Thanks and close \nIf you have any questions\, please do not hesitate to contact us. \nKind regards\, \nFelicity Harrison\nProgramme Manager: Sustained Dialogues \n\nShare this:\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n More\n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n Like this:Like Loading…

SUMMARY:Women’s Global Political Participation (online forum)
DESCRIPTION:Register here \nThe Peace Centre and its Board of Directors are convening an online forum on “Women’s Global political Participation” to further reflect on women’s roles in elections\, political participation and the impact of electoral processes on women. An initial conversation was held in April concentrating on women and elections in Africa. \nThis virtual forum will attempt to unpack the following questions: \n1. What are the factors leading to a decline in the quality of our democracies? How can women’s political participation contribute to turning the tide of democratic erosion? \n2. Is women’s participation shifting the definition of leadership? Does women’s political participation change/shift power relations and accountability? What has been the value of having women in political spaces? \n3. How can elections be organized differently to allow women’s meaningful participation and to influence the political process? \n4. What are the lessons learnt on women’s political participation and what are innovative responses to deal with the longstanding constraints of women’s political participation? \n5. How can women run for office and/or participate in the political processes when increasingly it requires substantial amounts of money? \n\nShare this:\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n More\n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n Like this:Like Loading…

SUMMARY:Global Open Access: Shifting Aims\, Important Implications -- Research Seminar
DESCRIPTION:The Institute for Development Studies (IDS)\, University of Nairobi\, is a premier multi-disciplinary and multi-purpose development research institute and carries out full-time research on high priority areas of social-economic development in Africa and the world in general. \nIDS convenes Research Seminars regularly. Welcome to our next IDS Research Seminar. \nWhen: 10th of February 2022\, starting from 4:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. East African Time (Nairobi). \nTitle: Global Open Access: Shifting Aims\, Important Implications. \nAbstract: Tracing its roots back to scholar-led online initiatives in the 1990s\, Open Access has since become both a political movement to democratise scholarly knowledge\, and a highly profitable business model that threatens Open Access by imposing new costs on scholarly publishing. Insufficient attention has been paid to the structure and hidden costs of various models of Open Access\, and their implications for scholars from low resource disciplines and research environments. Is Open Access a universal good\, or is there a need to reflect on how scholarly openness is structured\, and to ensure that it operates according to standards of epistemic justice and decolonization of knowledge? This research seminar will explore shifting debates about Open Access. \nBio of the Speakers:\nDr. Angela Okune\nAngela is an Associate Editor for Open Access journal\, Engaging Science\, Technology\, and Society. Having interest in Nairobi’s tech research sector\, she co-founded and maintains an experimental\, open ethnographic data portal called Research Data Share (www.researchdatashare.org). She received her doctorate in Anthropology from the University of California\, Irvine\, and currently works as a Senior Program Manager at Code for Science and Society. \nProf. Kate Meagher\nKate is an Associate Professor in Development Studies at the Department of International Development\, London School of Economics and Political Science. She has published widely on African informal economies and development\, most recently\, ‘Infrastructures of Inclusion: Inclusive Economies\, Informal Workers and the Social Contract’\, Development and Change (2021). She is also the editor of a special collection on ‘Decolonizing Open Access in Development Research’\, Development and Change\, (2021). \nPoster_Open Access seminar \n  \nRegister in advance for this meeting: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZcoduGhpzwoG9G9cWSDHSqkOo4WNRA3bHQN \n\nShare this:\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n More\n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n Like this:Like Loading…

The goal is to deepen capacity for land policy in Africa through improved access to knowledge and information on land policymaking and implementation.
